FAQ
What is Therapy or Psychotherapy?
Therapy is a professional relationship where a therapist holds a healing space and guides individuals, couples, or groups so that they can explore their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors to improve mental health and overall well-being. It offers a safe and confidential space to address experiences such as anxiety, depression, stress, trauma, relationship problems, and more.
How do I know if I need therapy?
You might benefit from therapy if you’re feeling overwhelmed, anxious, depressed, or stuck in certain patterns of thinking or behavior. Therapy can help if you’re struggling with relationships, life transitions, work stress, or grief, or if you simply want to better understand yourself and improve your well-being.
What type of services are available?
We offer Psychotherapy and Immigration related Evaluations.
What are Immigration related Evaluations?
Immigration Evaluations are mental health assessments for immigration court cases. These are often requested by an attorney and can be the defining factor for a person’s case. During the 2 – 3 sessions of 2 hours each, we will assess the client’s psychological state as well as detailed information about their life’s experiences. What types of therapies are available?
There are many different approaches to therapy, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Psychodynamic Therapy, Humanistic Therapy, and more. Therapists may also use a combination of methods to tailor treatment to your unique needs. For us, it is imperative that we meet the client where they are at and that we look at the whole person to understand what can work for them. Starting from that basis, each of our clinicians bring their own unique knowledge, established approach, and their personality to the therapeutic space and meet the client to explore which techniques can work best.
How long does therapy last?
The length of therapy depends on the individual’s needs and goals. Some people may only need a few sessions, while others may continue therapy for several months or longer. Therapy is often an ongoing process, but the frequency and duration are usually determined through collaboration between you and your therapist. However, there is no time limit for healing, everyone heals at a different pace and that’s okay.
What can I expect during my first therapy session?
During your first session, the therapist will likely ask you questions about your background, current issues, and intentions (goals). This is a chance for both of you to get to know each other and for the therapist to gather information to help guide treatment. You’ll also have the opportunity to ask any questions you have about the process.
Is therapy confidential?
Yes, therapy is confidential. Therapists are required by law and professional ethics to keep your information private. However, there are exceptions, such as if there’s a risk of harm to yourself or others, or if there’s a legal requirement for the therapist to report certain information. Your therapist will explain these exceptions at the start of therapy as it is still a collaborative process.
How much does therapy cost?
The cost of therapy can vary depending on the therapist’s qualifications, location, and the type of therapy offered. Many therapists offer sliding scale fees based on income, and some services may be covered by health insurance. It’s a good idea to check with both the therapist and your insurance provider about fees and coverage. Please reach out to us for your specific needs surrounding this question.
Can I use my insurance to pay for therapy?
Many health insurance plans cover therapy, but coverage can vary. Some plans may limit the number of sessions or require a referral from a primary care physician. Contact your insurance provider to understand what services are covered and ask the therapist whether they accept insurance. Our therapists have different availability when it comes to the insurances they take.
Is online therapy effective?
Yes, online therapy (teletherapy or telehealth) is just as effective as in-person therapy for many people. It offers flexibility and convenience, making it a good option for those with busy schedules, limited access to in-person services, or health concerns.
What if I don’t feel a connection with my therapist?
It’s important to feel comfortable with your therapist. If you don’t feel a connection or trust after a few sessions, it’s okay to discuss your concerns with them. Sometimes it’s necessary to try a different therapist to find someone who better meets your needs.
Do you provide your services for people from different backgrounds/communities?
Yes, we see people from different communities. We are open to providing free 15 min consultations to see if what you are looking for is what we can provide. Our offerings include and are not limited for immigrants, children of immigrants, BIPOC, racialized folk, 2LGBTQ+, etc.
